Veterinarian Information

Looking for a veterinarian in the area, knowledgeable ferret people, or just want to chit chat with other ferret owners/lovers.

It is recommended that you contact your local ferret shelter and see who they recommend for your area.  If your area does not have a local ferret shelter, here are some questions you should ask while "hunting" for the "perfect" vet that is knowledgably about ferrets.
Questions to ask:
1) How long has the doctor been practicing ferret medicine?
2) How many ferrets does the dr. encounter in a typical day or week?
3) Does the facility stock any vaccinations for ferrets?  Approved USDA rabies and Fervac-D and Purevax for canine distemper?
4) Can the facility house ferrets that need to be hospitalized?  Does it have the proper cages for them?
5) Ask about their fees for routine check-ups and vaccinations
6) Does it perform surgeries on ferrets (spaying/neutering) etc., Can the vet handle and treat common diseases of the ferret?
7) Is the ferret experienced in difficult surgeries such as splenectomies, adrenal surgery and other types of ferret surgeries.
8) Does the vet stay up to date on latest developments in ferret medicine and surgical techniques?
What you are looking for is do they appear to be ferret-friendly veterinarian.  Do you feel comfortable with the doctor.  If you are not comfortable, chances are the ferret won't be either.
After you find the doctor you think is good, make an appointment for a routine check-up, meet the doctor, see how they treat the ferret, ask any additional questions you might have.  If the doctor seems preoccupied, unwilling to listen to you, the doctor might be presumptuous to give your ferret the care that may save his life.
